The figures side by side

Hopaby and Slick compared, row by row
  Hopaby Slick
Monthly price £0 on pay as you go; £29 on Pro. Hopaby charges no VAT. £22 a month on Essential and £37 on Advanced, each covering the owner’s column; £250 a month on Supercharged for the owner plus unlimited staff and chair renters. + VAT The page says prices are exclusive of VAT. Essential is labelled for sole traders working alone, Advanced for small to medium businesses and Supercharged for businesses with 10 or more staff. checked 29 October 2026, source
Extra team members Three team members included, then £5 a month each on pay as you go. Unlimited team members on Pro. £14 a month for each extra staff member or chair renter on Essential; £21 on Advanced. Supercharged covers unlimited staff and chair renters in its £250. + VAT The Supercharged column of the same page also shows “£25/month” as a cost per staff member, which does not match its “£250 for the owner plus unlimited staff” line; we use the £250 line. Essential is labelled “1 Staff” in the plan table, although the pricing line adds £14 per staff member; check with Slick before you rely on Essential for a team. checked 29 October 2026, source
Card, in person 3% on pay as you go; 1.75% + 20p on Pro. 1.29% per in-person transaction, Tap to Pay included, on consumer debit and credit cards except AMEX. No fixed fee is listed. Custom rates are offered above £10,000 a month. + VAT Slick’s terms, https://www.getslick.com/terms-and-conditions, give the headline rate as “1.29% + VAT” and say custom rates below it trigger a longer contract. checked 29 October 2026, source
Card, online 3% on pay as you go; 1.75% + 20p on Pro. 2.17% + 27p per online transaction, including card on file and SMS payment links. + VAT Slick’s terms, https://www.getslick.com/terms-and-conditions, say a transaction processing fee of 2.17% + 27p per transaction excluding VAT is deducted. checked 29 October 2026, source
Deposits A deposit confirms the appointment. You choose the amount, per service if you like. Online deposits of 50%, 100% or a custom £ amount, set once for online bookings; a 25% option is switched on by asking Slick’s live chat. The pricing page lists 2.17% + 27p per deposit. Deposits are paid out next day to a payments account of your own, which you set up first. + VAT The 2.17% + 27p per deposit is on https://www.getslick.com/pricing, which says its prices exclude VAT. The help article does not describe per-service deposit rules or what happens to an unpaid deposit. checked 29 October 2026, source
No-show protection Save a client’s card when they book, and charge a no-show or late-cancellation fee under your own policy. Card fees as above. Switched on by asking Slick’s live chat. The client’s card is taken when they book online; you type in the no-show fee yourself and charge it from the booking. A deposit can be kept as the fee, held as account credit or refunded. Slick says it cannot guarantee the card has the funds, and a client can remove their card details at any time. The article states no separate Slick charge for the feature. The deposit options are in https://help.getslick.com/en/articles/2509291-mark-a-client-as-no-show. checked 29 October 2026, source
Texts 5p a part on pay as you go; 4p a part on Pro. Unlimited text reminders on every plan. Confirmations are included on Advanced and Supercharged and are an optional add-on on Essential (price not published). Marketing texts: 50 a month included on Essential, 500 on Advanced, 2,000 on Supercharged. + VAT The pricing page says bundles are available on top of the monthly allowance but gives no price. Slick’s terms, https://www.getslick.com/terms-and-conditions, say the balance tops up automatically with 100 texts at £6 + VAT, up to a monthly cap of £150 + VAT. checked 29 October 2026, source
Commission on new clients 0%. Hopaby has no client marketplace, so it sends you no new clients. None stated. Slick says it does not charge commission on new clients, and its plan table lists no new-client fees. checked 29 October 2026, source
Contract Monthly. No minimum term. A monthly rolling subscription as standard. Slick’s terms ask for 30 days’ notice to close an account and keep billing through the notice period. A discount or custom card rate can trigger a minimum term of 12 months or more. The pricing page, https://www.getslick.com/pricing, says the subscription is monthly rolling and that you can leave at any time, and that asking for terms different from the list price will trigger a contract. Slick’s terms say accounts are closed through its account closure form. checked 29 October 2026, source
Taking your data with you Yes, by request. The account owner can get the client list as a CSV after answering security questions. It is given only to the account owner. Slick’s article on moving to Slick, https://help.getslick.com/en/articles/1739618-how-do-i-switch-to-slick, says the export and import of client information carries no charge and that transferring future bookings is chargeable. checked 29 October 2026, source

Hopaby charges no VAT. Slick prices are as published on the dates shown; ‘+ VAT’ means their price excludes VAT at 20%.

How we compared: we read Slick’s public pages, listed below, and recorded each figure with the plan it applies to. We left out introductory offers and trials. Where a page does not give a figure we say so rather than guess. Where prices differ by plan, the plan is named.

A worked month

A four-chair salon taking £6,000 a month by card across 120 bookings of £50 each. Slick lists no new-client fee, so it makes no difference whether the 30 new clients are new or returning. We show Slick’s Essential and Advanced plans, since Slick’s own page lists a per-staff price only for those two. Texts are left out on both sides. We assume one card payment per booking, taken in person; a deposit plus a balance would be two payments and two per-transaction fees, and Slick’s online and deposit rate is higher (2.17% + 27p).

On Slick’s Essential plan

Hopaby, pay as you go

£185.00

3% of £6,000.00 = £180.00 , plus 1 team member beyond the first three at £5 = £5.00. No monthly fee, no VAT.

Hopaby, Pro

£158.00

£29 + 1.75% of £6,000.00 (£105.00) + 120 × 20p (£24.00). No VAT.

Slick

£141.40

Ex VAT; £169.68 with 20% VAT.

The arithmetic for Slick: Essential: £22 for the owner’s column plus 3 extra staff × £14 = £42.00, so £64.00. In-person card rate: 1.29% of £6,000 = £77.40, with no fixed fee listed. No new-client fee. Total £141.40 ex VAT; £169.68 with 20% VAT (Slick lists its prices ex VAT, so we add VAT to the whole total).

On Slick’s Advanced plan

Hopaby, pay as you go

£185.00

3% of £6,000.00 = £180.00 , plus 1 team member beyond the first three at £5 = £5.00. No monthly fee, no VAT.

Hopaby, Pro

£158.00

£29 + 1.75% of £6,000.00 (£105.00) + 120 × 20p (£24.00). No VAT.

Slick

£177.40

Ex VAT; £212.88 with 20% VAT.

The arithmetic for Slick: Advanced: £37 for the owner’s column plus 3 extra staff × £21 = £63.00, so £100.00. In-person card rate: 1.29% of £6,000 = £77.40 as above. No new-client fee. Total £177.40 ex VAT; £212.88 with 20% VAT (VAT added to the whole total, as above).

Assumption: one card payment per booking; a deposit plus a balance would be two payments and two per-transaction fees. Slick’s prices were taken from its public pages on 29 October 2026. Hopaby’s are on our pricing page.

What Slick does well

What Slick does that Hopaby doesn’t

Moving from Slick to Hopaby

What moves

  • Your clients: names, mobile numbers and notes, by CSV or by typing them in.
  • Your services and prices.
  • Your team and their working days.
  • Future appointments, by CSV where Slick lets you export them, or re-entered by hand.

What stays behind

  • Stored card details: these do not move between payment providers, so clients save a card again with Hopaby.
  • Deposits and account credit held on client profiles in Slick: settle or refund these before you close, because they stay in Slick.
  • Your Slick account and subscription, until you close it through Slick’s account closure form.

The steps

  1. Set up Hopaby alongside Slick: your services, prices and team.
  2. Import your client list. Ask Slick for the CSV (the account owner answers security questions), then send it to us, or type in your regulars.
  3. Run both for a fortnight. Take new bookings on Hopaby, finish the ones already in Slick, and send a card-save link to the clients you see most.
  4. Slick’s terms ask for 30 days’ notice to close and bill through that period, so submit the closure form when the Slick diary is nearly empty.

You do not have to switch in a day. Run both for a fortnight, and close Slick only when its diary is empty.
